Ready By 21: How Well Are Illinois Children & Youth Doing? As a member of the Statewide Collaborative for Prevention Advocacy, the ILAACP is very interested in educating the general public, policymakers and funders about the value of prevention and early intervention programs, practices and policies that increase the odds for Illinois children and youth.
To maximize our advocacy efforts, we first must answer the question, "How well are Illinois children and youth doing?" The ILAACP is particularly interested in hearing from you about how well you believe our state's African-American children and youth are doing.

Grant Opportunities
Healthy Start Initiative
Grants to eliminate disparities in perinatal health indicators for minority and
under-served populations. Application deadline is December
6, 2007.
Healthy Behaviors in Women Grants to develop, implement, evaluate, and
disseminate novel approaches that concurrently address the relationship between
women's healthy eating and mental health during the perinatal period. Application deadline is December 7, 2007.
Edmund Stanley Jr. Research Grants
Offering four grants of $10,000 to recipients to support research on community
based youth programs. Application deadline is December 12, 2007.
Youth Violence Prevention: Community Level Change
Funding for projects that focus on
assessing the efficacy or effectiveness of interventions designed to change
community characteristics and social processes to reduce rates of youth
violence perpetration and victimization. Application deadline is January 7, 2008.
SAMHSA Knowledge Dissemination Conference Grant Providing grants for initiatives that disseminate
knowledge about mental health services and substance abuse
prevention and treatment and integrate that knowledge into real-world
practice as effectively and efficiently as possible. Application deadline is January 31, 2008.

Legislative Watch
HB1330 Ensuring Success in School Taskforce HB 1330 creates a task force within the Illinois State Board of Education to develop policies that provide teens that are either pregnant, a parent, or victim of domestic abuse adequate support to successfully finish school.
HR 384 After School Funding Policy Taskforce HR 384 establishes a statewide taskforce to find a solution to fund after school programming permanently.
SB776 Task Force on the Condition of African-American Men in Illinois SB776 creates a task force within the Illinois Department of Human Services responsible for identifying recommendations for improving life chances of Illinois African American males.
SB 545 Culturally Competent Healthcare Demonstration Program SB 545 creates a demonstration project to increase the level of cultural competence in Illinois health care settings.
SB 547 Health Data Taskforce SB 547 establishes a statewide taskforce to design anintegrated health data gathering system which will help the field understand the scope of health problems and target health disparities.

IDHS celebrates first Worldwide Diabetes Day As Gov. Blagojevich proclaimed Wednesday, November 14, World Diabetes Day in Illinois, Illinois Department of Human Services Secretary Carol L. Adams, Ph.D., urged all Illinoisans to learn more about diabetes and how it can be prevented
and controlled through diet and exercise.

Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings Through the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program uninsured women of any income will be able to receive free screenings and treatment. Treating Diabetes During Pregnancy Can Break Link to Childhood Obesity In the largest study of its kind, research
done by the Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research shows that the risk of childhood obesity rises in tandem with a
pregnant woman's blood sugar level and that untreated gestational
diabetes nearly doubles a child's risk of becoming obese by age 5 to 7.
The study also shows for the first time that by treating women with
gestational diabetes, the child's risk of becoming obese is

History South Central Community Services, Inc., was founded in 1970 by the residents of the Chatham/Avalon communities in response to the lack of suitable mental health services for an increasing number of children with emotional and behavioral disorders that excluded them from attending Chicago Public Schools.
Programs
South Central Community Services, Inc., has blossomed into a major comprehensive social service agency, offering 15 different programs and services from five (5) facilities located throughout the metropolitan Chicagoland area, governed by a 25-member Board of Directors composed of representatives from the business, corporate, government, and education communities who guide the Agency in fulfillment of its mission.
South Central primarily serves Avalon Park, Burnside, Chatham, Englewood, Greater Grand Crossing, and South Shore. South Central's staff of more than 100 continue to diligently address the myriad of economic, educational, psychological and social challenges confronting its constituents. Each year, thousands of residents, ranging from youth to seniors, are beneficiaries of services provided by South Central staff.
