Community Voices

Community Voices: Illinois African American Perspectives on Violence Against Women and Girls
The Illinois African American Coalition for Prevention's Community Voices project seeks to understand how African American communities in Illinois (outside of Chicago) view and define violence against women and girls. The project will research and document how African American communities in Winnebago, Champaign, and St. Clair counties currently respond to this type of violence and what they believe to be effective strategies for preventing and ending gender-based violence. Project findings will be disseminated to local services providers and policymakers, via a graphically-enhanced report, with the intended objective of raising public awareness about community perceptions of and solutions to violence against women and girls.
Our community partners for this project include
Rockford Sexual Assault Counseling,
Winnebago County Health Department,
Urban League of Champaign County,
A Woman's Fund,
Violence Prevention Center of Southwestern Illinois, and
East Side Health District.
This project is made possible through support
from the Chicago Foundation for
Women, Illinois Violence Prevention Authority, and Walgreen's Co.

Choose Respect Illinois
The Illinois Violence Prevention Authority (IVPA) recently awarded the ILAACP a $25,000 grant to fund our participation in the planning and implementation of Choose Respect Illinois, a statewide, grant-making initiative providing schools, faith-based organizations and after school programs with a mini-grant
- i.e., $300K over 3 yrs - to implement a national teen dating violence prevention curriculum targeting youth between the ages of 11 and 14.
The initiative employs an innovative mix of interactive learning tools to teach adolescents how to form healthy relationships to prevent dating abuse before it starts. The Centers of Disease Control & Prevention, the curriculum's author, launched Choose Respect in 10 cities across the United States before partnering with IVPA to launch the country's first statewide initiative. As a member of the statewide Choose Respect Illinois Steering Committee, the ILAACP is responsible for helping to develop the project goals and objectives, increase public awareness about the initiative, and help identify potential grantees serving high need communities.
